There is a plan to launch FAST TALK 2, intended primarily for intermediate students, in the fall of 2010. Please check this website for future announcements.

FAST TALK 1 focuses on the present continuous tense, simple present tense, future tense (“will” and “going to”) and the simple past tense. It also focuses on pro-nouns, prepositions of time, articles, basic nouns, regular verbs, common irregular verbs, basic verb-noun collocations, and pronunciation.

Usually, if a fast talker is in mid-sentence when time expires, it is recommended that the player be allowed to finish the statement before stopping that player. If you are a sports fan, this would be the same as the NBA and NFL rules where a player can still score after time has actually expired, rather than the NHL rule where a player has to make the puck cross the goal line before time expires.

An FT score helps determine an individual fast talker’s English level and provides the student with a target to aim for in his or her English studies. If a fast talker, given a minute to speak while shown a random selection of cards, can get a score of 21 at level 1, his or her FT score is FT1-21. If a fast talker masters the first five levels (at least 35 points at each level) but can only get 16 points at level 6, then his or her FT Score is FT6-16. The FT score is a helpful measuring stick that gives students (and teachers) clearly, identifiable and adjustable aims to shoot for in their studying. (Note: because some of the illustrations are ambiguous etc., fast talkers should already be familiar with the FAST TALK 1 cards before they take an FT test. This ambiguity factor can also cause native English speakers to get some wrong answers too!)
